I cannot express in words the joy I am feeling right now. It has been a dream since forever to be published, and now to see that dream being brought to life takes me to cloud nine! I sincerely want to place on record my profound gratitude to Writer's Pocket Publishing for selecting 'Tears of Terra' to be published in their anthology 'Spark Within'. I am writing this blog today to take you through my journey of writing the poem.
8 pm, 4th June, 2024, I got a notification about an inter-school competition on World Environment Day saying, "All entries must be completed before midnight." After contemplating a lot on what my submission was going to be I decided to write a poem, only one problem-it was 11 pm now. That 1 hour has been the most anxiety-inducing 1 hour of my life, I mean it was only me, my thoughts, and my laptop racing against time to make it to the finish line. Finally, with trembling hands drenched in sweat, I submitted my entry at 11:59 pm. Guess my luck was not with me today because the wi-fi started acting up, and at 12:01 the portal shut down.
Nascent 'Tears of Terra' was crib-less now, and it would be like this for quite some time. It was not until late December 2024, that I found out about Writer's Pocket. Working with these guys was a breeze, they've got everything covered, right from submissions to publishing. After my poem got selected for their upcoming anthology 'Spark Within' I was given a publication certificate, and in a matter of days, I had the book in my hands!
From the Author's Desk:
'Tears of Terra' is a poem written to heed the call of saving Mother Earth. I was inspired by the Greek myth of Gaea waking up and unleashing hell on the planet, thus the future calls on us to lull Terra back to sleep before the wound deepens any further. Set in a dystopian world, the narrator of the poem reminisces about the days when the Earth was a place humans called home. It serves as a warning to the humans of today to act swiftly and set things right. If they do not, future generations will endure pain and suffering as a result of our actions.
The Poem:
Tears of Terra
I see the light of a day so feared,
In the blink of an eye, humanity disappeared,
I see the storms of despair and distraught,
As the earth breaks out in grotesque droughts.
I miss the days when leaves adorned their lovely trees,
Now, deserts creeped in vast-lands once green,
I miss the days of the marble so blue,
Now a barren, dry and sandy hue.
I miss the heartwarming, gladdening petrichor,
Now, only a heart wrenching, distressing vellichor,
I miss the mellifluous, cold rains,
Now, blank skies of sorrows and pain.
I hear the sound of the war drums beat,
Humanity shall bow lest Terra’s wrath should unleash,
I fear the day the wound gets too deep,
It is on you to lull her back to sleep.
